Brugge, Belgium is one of many northern European cities known as "The Venice of the North" on account of its numerous canals. The town seems to have come straight out of the Middle Ages. The houses are built of brick, worn smooth by the passing years. There are also majestic buildings and churches with clear, melodious chimes. All these buildings huddle on the banks of canals, where swans glide gracefully across dark waters. The town undergoes a metamorphosis in summer and during festivals, when it livens up and becomes a swarming, bustling city.
