Kids Ask "What's a Typewriter?"
How many of you learned on a manual typewriter? We weren't allowed to use anything but a manual while I was in HS. When the youngsters at school see a picture of a typewriter, they have no idea what it is. Having to weed out a lot of books with telephones, typewriters, record players, etc. "What's a record?" is another frequent question.
These 3 manuals are in the Pike Heritage Museum along with a few others. Most in need of repair.

I am so familiar with these..
The most fun thing was to reach up & slide the roller back!
Our HS had 3 electric typewriters we all took turns on..
A lot different from "Pounding the keys" on the old Royals!
Great collection of shots!

This is a cool collection of shots. I'm glad we have computers, or I would have wasted a lot of paper messing stuff up. Computers are much more forgiving!

I learned to touch type on one of these! Not quite as ancient looking though! Times certainly have changed.

Had fun in those bygone days. Changing the ribbon was often a problem

I typed lots of letters on a 3-row-keyboard Corona like the one you photographed. Dad always carried one just like it on trips. A super set of interesting photos. Some day I'll have to visit that museum. And I'm inspired to photograph a 1918 Remington that's in my basement.

I learned on a Royal like this one in high school 1947. There were no letters or figures on any of the keys, so we had to memorize the a;sldkfjgh pattern for the center keyboard, etc.etc. It was one of the best courses I ever took anywhere.
