Columbia River Gorge hikes ~ Thursday 10 May 2012. My youngest son was up for a visit from Arizona and wanted to do some good day hiking so we got up before dawn and drove to the Eagle Creek trail head, near Cascades Lock, Oregon.
We hiked the six miles up to Tunnel Falls stopping to photograph many of the unique, interesting and beautiful waterfalls along the way. We hiked at a brisk pace and covered a lot of trail in a relatively short amount of time. The weather couldn't have been better for hiking or for enjoying the scenery. Eagle Creek was running high, fast, and clear.
We returned back down the Eagle Creek Canyon to our car, then drove old highway 30 so my son could see horsetail and Multnomah falls, which are right next to the road. When he was very young we took him on the hike up to the top of Multnomah, but he was too young to remember that hike.
After the short drive down highway 30, we returned to the trail head for Elowah Falls, a short hike of less than two miles round trip. Lots of spray was blowing hard at the trail bridge at the foot of the falls, so we climbed the trail on opposite side to get enough out of the spray to snap a few photos.
After the Elowah falls hike (we didn't hike the Upper McCord falls on this trip though I had done so in the past), we drove over to the trail head for Beacon Rock (where a hiking friend of mine with the WTA had recently done so volunteer trail maintenance).
Forgetting about being on the Washington side of the Columbia River, I didn't have a $30 Discover Pass and since I didn't feel like paying ten dollars to hike up Beacon Rock, which I had done so many times in the past - - I dropped my son off with a camera at the trailhead and let him make the hike while I drove a short distance to gas up the car.
After my son's hike up Beacon Rock we stopped at The Dalles for a big
dinner at the Baldwin Saloon. It was late when we got back to our
house in Eastern Washington but it was a day well spent. Fun, sun,
fresh air, good exercise and quality time with my youngest son.
