Ohanapecosh River - winter

The park was closed but the road was clear. Hiked in blue jeans. Found snow on the East Side Trail along the Ohanapecosh River to the Grove of the Patriarchs. Last hike of 2011, and a good one. Good way to end 2011 and start looking forward to road trips, hikes, and backpacking adventures in 2012.

Chuck - Merry Christmas to you and many fine miles on your two wheeler come the first warm weather of 2012. Of course knowing your love of back road travels on a motorcycle, I'm certain that back roads will see you riding about, long before spring arrives. Best wishes. OMT

Thank you Virginia from Sydney. It is one of the prettiest rivers in the Pacific Northwest with its crystal clear water and lovely free stone river bed. Enjoy your summer as we look forward to marching out of winter. I once spent some time in your fine country. Nicest people in the world and I loved Mt. Buffalo (and the coast of course). Happy holidays. OMT

thank you LIsbeth. I find winter landscapes very peaceful and this is one of my favorite river though it only exists for a couple dozen miles at most. Short and sweet the Ohanapecosh River. OMT

Thank you Steve. I'm just fortunate to live and wander about in the Pacific Northwest. Winter scenes like this one are everywhere. Days are getting longer (and eventually warmer) now. Wishing you a great 2012 on your two wheeler and many happy back road highway adventures. OMT

Hi ladigue. In the stretch of river just above the Grove of the Patriarchs (hiking both sides of the Ohanapecosh River) I have seen deer, elk, several black bear, and the only cougar I have ever seen in the wild. Must be that wildlife enjoys beautiful places to live as much as we enjoy passing through this area. OMT

Hi Alice-Izabella from Brasov - - I hope you are doing well. The Ohanapecosh is a river that is only 17 miles long. It starts at the Ohanapecosh glacier above Indian Bar (on the Wonderland Trail that circles Mt. Rainier) and leaps down canyon over many waterfalls, where it picks up a substantial amount of clear water from Chinook Creek. It ends its namesake when it joins the Cowlitz River. The Ohanapecosh is a clear river, as you point out, which is unusual for glacier fed streams. Most have glacial flour (ground up rock) that colors the water. But the Ohanapecosh is clear with a lovely multicolored free stone river bed. I have hiked along every section of the river bordered by trail, but am pleased that it has several sections too rough for a trail, so it keeps its secrets. OMT
