Salmon River sheep - we stop

There is quite a story that goes with photographs of this road trip, taken in June of 2006. The weather on this trip was almost constant rain, but still we had a lot of interesting experiences.

Our goad was to hike a section of the route Lewis and Clark took over Lemhi Pass. We lucked into finding a wonderful place to stay while in the area. It was the Solaas Bed and Breakfast, owned and operated by Roger and Sharon Solaas. It is located in Baker, Idaho (between Salmon and Tendoy, Idaho).

They hunt, fish, and butcher their own game, make jerkey, sausage, and host of other food stuffs, gleened from the outdoors.

The "link" that made our stay ironic, is that William Least Head-Moon (who's books I had read before arriving at the Solaas B & B), had stayed with Roger and Sharon, when he was working on his book "River Horse".

William mentions his stay at the Solaas B & B in chapter 8 (The Mountain Streams), in a section titled: "A shameless festal board", of his book "River Horse"

I have included the road trip story I wrote following this June 2006 trip, as well as a 2009 interview done by CNN, with William Least Heat-Moon. Both are included as narrative with: this photo set; the first and last photo in this set; and the photo of the Tendoy Store; and my photo of the double story red Solass B & B.

Following this trip, my wife and I returned to to Pittsburg Landing in October to take an interesting jet boat trip up through Hells Canyon. There is a photo set for that trip as well.

So, I hope you enjoy some of these "old photographs" and a bit of the story that goes with them. OMT

Thanks Lisbeth. If you look closely you can see that we were fortunate to have 4WD. The sheep left quite a trail on the road they traveled. It was actually fun, to stop and watch them and their colorful herders go by. Some of the lambs seemed as interested in us as we were of their prosession. OMT
