The brink - into the void

This is a view you wouldn't want to have from an inflatable raft. It is looking down from the Mildred Point trail to the very brink and top of Comet Falls on Van Trump Creek.

Friday morning early 8.22.08. After driving all the way from the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Northeastern Oregon, where we had hiked all day Wednesday - - we headed up into Mt. Rainier park via the Stevens Canyon road.

My youngest son and I intended to hike to Comet Falls and Mildred Point and we wanted to be on the trail as early as we could. Along the way though, a spectacular sunrise "happened" and we had no choice but to stop and take the time to take some photos of the beautiful sight.

We started our hike at 6:30 am and were the first up the trail that morning. We stopped at Comet Falls for a snack and photos, then headed on up to Mildred Point. We crossed a snow bridge over Van Trump Creek on the way to Mildred Point.

At our destination, we found a herd of Mt. Goat. There were at least six little ones in the herd and they made wonderful subjects for photographs as they were bunched on a treeless rocky ridge with green meadows in back of them.

We returned the way we came from our hike, then did a little hiking among the tourists at Paradise (LOTS of people).
