Nampaweap basalt petroglyphs

South of the Mt. Trumbull wilderness off the 90 mile dirt road [BLM #5 - - the Main Street Road] from St. George, Utah to Toroweap (on the north rim of the grand canyon) - - you can hike a short distance to these interesting petroglyphs, pecked in rock. The area is surrounded by pines, junipers, and rattlesnakes.

    NAMPAWEAP:

Nampaweap is a low basalt cliff located on an ancient passageway of native Americans, who lived in the Mt. Trumbull area of the Grand Canyon.

We entered the area on what is called the "Main Street" route, a 90 mile dirt road from St. George, Utah. When we left our camp at Toroweap we exited the area on the Sunshine Road, that rejoins paved highways near Fredonia, Utah.

Before leaving the Toroweap area we backtracked along the Main Street route, far enough to make the hike into the Nampaweap petroglyphs. It was a side trip well worth the effort. The site is surrounded by a forest of juniper . Watch for rattlesnakes if you visit the area.
