paypal phishing attempt

Jeez. Here I am an internet expert and I had to view source on the message to make sure it was fake (the link pointed to an IP). These jerks are getting really good.

I got a pretty convincing eBay one the other day, the bastards really are improving.

I got a similar one from eBay. Gmail actually picked up on it and put this at the top of the message:

Warning: This message may not be from whom it claims to be. Beware of following any links in it or of providing the sender with any personal information.

I took the phishing quiz you posted about on your blog. Scored 10/10 (to my surprise, some of those were tough calls).

One thing that every phish attempt has is a threat of closing down your account. It's a simple way to freak people out and gets them to do what the phishers want them to do right away.

A simple way to tell if a PayPal e-mail is genuine is that they will specifically tell you to open a new browser and enter the link to their homepage (https://www.paypal.com) rather than clicking on a link.

Still, a lot of less tech-savvy (and less naturally suspicious) people are likely to be fooled by these e-mails :(

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Scams, Phish, and Fraud, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group. And I'm adding that quiz to the list of resources in that group, thanks for the information! (I got 8/10 - but I usually click through on those links to see what shows up in the browser's address bar, so the ones that I got wrong were due to the right stuff being displayed on the image, even in the status bar.)

    5. This photo was invited and added to the Scams, Phish, and Fraud group.
