The road to Graaf Reinet in the Karoo - Eastern Cape vignettes
In South Africa there is an area called the Karoo. A vast and mysterious area known locally for its extreme weather and succulent lamb. An area three times the size of England, but with a population of barely 2 million people. Rainfall is intermittent and varies between 60 and 400mm annually, with temperatures ranging from -10 degrees Celsius in winter to over 40 degrees in summer.
Most of this area is covered in vast sheep and game farms, where the plains roll away to touch the cerulean sky providing an unimaginable sense of space while the silence seems to echo amongst the flat topped hills and rock-strewn koppies. Springbok graze amongst herds of sheep, raptors soar on rising thermals, and the Cape Cobra is king.
From a geological point of view it has been a vast inland basin for most of the past 250 million years and is the most fossil-rich area in the world. At one stage the area was glaciated, later there were great inland deltas, seas, lakes and swamps.
