why do you use samsung in vertical position? and for what purposes the second monitor is using?

  3. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

Well, it saves space to have it vertical, but also good for working on Word documents, where portrait view is easier to work with.

I usually have my messenger/Skype apps open on the Samsung, which leaves plenty of room on my iMac screen for Photoshop, web browsing etc.

OMG! You have more Apple gear on your desk than some authorised resellers in HK have in their stores!

  5. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

That's not difficult Kai, they're pretty pants here as you know.

WE NEED AN APPLE STORE, IF YOU'RE LISTENING APPLE!! There! Hopefully word will get to them! Hehe!

    How's the iMac?

  7. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

The iMac is great. It runs even faster on Leopard. I can't fault it really, that is until a newer, thinner, faster, lighter, more-power-efficient model comes along! Hehe!

  8. erlendekseth (55 months ago | reply)

great setup! love the vertical screen!

Helloo - Ang, Chong, Zoe and I are all amazed at all the gadgets you have on your desk!!! Where's the iPhone?

  13. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

Hi Anthony! I didn't know you Flickr'd too?! Yeah, I'm somewhat of a gadget whore.

The iPhone is taking a temporary leave of absence, ie it's died. I've asked Wendy to try and exchange it for me at an Apple Store in the UK.

    Where's your old mouse pad?

    This one:
    flickr.com/photos/crouchingdonkey/1161717819/

It looked so much better than the new one!

  15. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

Hi Henrik. Yeah, the old one does look better than the new one, I agree. But, the new one is a proper mouse pad, and works much better. The mouse can 'read' it better, and it glides more smoothly.

  16. Henrik Christiansen (55 months ago | reply)

    I see.
I'm on the look-out for a new mouse pad for myself. What's your called?
I'm also thinking about ordering a VX Revolution myself - is it a good mouse?
How does those two work together? Smoothless?

  17. Crouching Donkey (55 months ago | reply)

The new mouse pad is made by a company called Elecom. But many companies make special pads for laser mice.

The VX is a great mouse, yes. I'd highly recommend it to anyone! But do try it for size first. If you have large hands, the MX might be a better choice.

The iMac, PowerBook and mouse match my setup :P

  23. erlendekseth (53 months ago | reply)

I´m a graphic designer, and I´m getting this in my office, but I´m seriously worried how the screen wil work out. I´ll use it with a secondary screen, a classic lcd, so I wonder how the two will look together, and which will be most accurate to reproduce colors and hues. I see you have a similar set-up, how do they work together? Besides, the mirror effect from the imac worries me.

  24. Crouching Donkey (53 months ago | reply)

Well, as far as the glossy screen goes, if you have a window, or a source of light behind you, then it could be a problem. I'm not sure what to suggest except blinds!

I don't use my secondary screen all the time. And when I do, it's just for menus, messenger boxes, etc, so faithful colour reproduction isn't an issue. I have tried to get it as close to the iMac screen as possible, but the Samsung screen is still slightly too blue. I guess it would depend on your secondary LCD monitor. Plus you can get those monitor calibration tools to match up your screens. I don't know how well they work. I just know they exist.

Good luck with your setup, and post some pics!

really nice photo. you said that you have a replacement HD in your powerbook. i thought that you couldn't do that on a mac. its just that i was wanting to update my macbook HD and was wondering if you could give me more info.

  30. Crouching Donkey (52 months ago | reply)

    Thanks skyeandy1!

If it's a MacBook you have, then replacing the HD is incredibly easy. It's just a small matter of removing a few screws, and sliding the existing HD out. Have a look at the guides at www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/ for further info.

    Good luck! :-)

  42. phillip24fan (46 months ago | reply)

how do you get the monitor to display sideways?

  43. applec2400 (46 months ago | reply)

    agreed with philip24fan?

Does Leopard/the iMac have the capability out of the box? I figured it would be a PC driver only thing. I would like to have a vertical monitor for photo editing but passed them buy figuring it wouldn't work.

  44. Crouching Donkey (46 months ago | reply)

    Hi philip24fan and applec2400!

    The short answer yes!

    The long answer:
Tiger/Leopard and the iMac are able to display on an extra monitor, right out of the box. Once you've plugged your external monitor in, just go into System Preferences > Display > Arrangement, to fine tune the positioning of the external monitor in relation to your iMac. By positioning, I mean you could have the second monitor mounted on the left of your iMac, or even above if you so wish. Fine tuning it allows documents/windows/images to be dragged from one screen to the other fairly seamlessly. But, because of screen differences in terms of quality, resolution, brightness and colour, it'll be difficult to get an exact match.

  45. applec2400 (46 months ago | reply)

Yes, but how do you do it vertically? Because I've never seen the option to rotate the output image.

  46. Crouching Donkey (46 months ago | reply)

Ah ok. The option only shows up in a window on the external monitor, once it's plugged in. You have options to keep it 'Standard', rotate 90°, 180°, or 270°.

  47. applec2400 (46 months ago | reply)

Gotcha! I've been stuck with an iBook for 3 years so I have never been able to toy with it even on my work's computers.

    Thanks, that makes me happy
