Black houses in Marken

    Marken is a former island in the Zuiderzee (now called IJsselmeer). It is now connected with the mainland, but the whole village is still very traditional. The (wooden) houses were built very close together to get a better defense against the seawind. Several houses are still painted black. Cars are not allowed in the village.
