- Four individually wrapped Spam musubi, made with pressed brown rice and marinated Spam slices
- Broccoli trees to fill the gap and keep the contents from jostling in transit from our apartment to the Mall (as you can see, it worked!)
- American flag! :)
Obama Inaugural Bento 01.20.09
This is part of the bento that we carried with us to the inauguration! I made spam musubi in honor of the President and his Hawaiian background. This photo only shows part of the complete meal in the environment in which it was consumed (my camera died soon after I took this photo - I had just changed the batteries before leaving the house but I think the cold got to them!). For a full description of this bento and our day at the Mall, see: culinarylinguist.blogspot.com/2009/01/spam-musubi-on-mall...

I've always wanted to try Spam musubi, but I've never had spam and I'm not sure if I'll like it. I hear it's salty and I'm not a huge salt flavor fan.

Spam musubi at the inaugural! I bet President Obama would have loved a bite (I read he's a big spam musubi fan! :))

although I'm not a spam fan myself I have to admin the idea of spam musubi is quite appetising. I fear that the diet won't permit though!

ILikeDragons, I hear you about the salt, although actually this spam wasn't too salty after its bath in the soy-Japanese cooking wine-sugar marinade.
Maki, yay! That was the idea! I wish he could have had a bite. I wonder if we we were the only ones in that huge crowd who were eating spam musubi...? I was hoping that he was a spam musubi fan. I also read somewhere that he likes broccoli. :)
themadhiker, the Spam website lists all the Spam varieties available, including Low sodium, Lite, and even Turkey Spam: www.spam.com/eatspam/varieties.aspx - Perhaps you could find a variety that fits with your diet? ;)

Hmmm...I guess I'm going to have to find this marinade and just try it for myself. (:

ILikeDragons: Oops, yeah I forgot to give you some kind of link/clue...! All I did was simmer a mixture of 1/8 c. soy sauce, 1/8 c. Japanese cooking wine, and a scant teaspoon or so of sugar in a small saucepan, and then added 4 slices of already-pan-fried spam to it. I let the whole thing cool, and then placed it in the fridge to marinate overnight.
Here's a recipe you could take a look at: allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spam-Musubi/Detail.aspx Seems like there can be a lot of variation to the marinade; this one also includes oyster sauce. I was happy with my simple 3-ingredient marinade, though!
If you try it, let me know how you like it! I grew up on Spam (well, not like we had it regularly, but it did figure in our meals occasionally), so having spam musubi for the first time (a few years ago, when I was living in Seattle) was not much of a stretch for me.
