its an outdoor spa frequented by a lot of tourists on their way to/from the airport to reykjavík. the lagoon is a run off from a nearby aluminium plant i think. the water is really warm and really nice. my icelandic friends always comment on how dirty it must be as lots of people mess around/have sex in there :)

but it is really nice there.

Is that a geothermal plant in the backg-- wait. I just read your comment. hmm. It's an aluminum plant? Eeew. Sex in the water. Hmm. Well, nevermind. I'd swim there anyway.

it might be a geothermal plant... there is some kind of plant anyhoo nearby. and the lagoon is heated by the runoff. or something.

It's indeed a geothermal plant in the back. Like "1541" mentioned, the lagoon is fed with output water of this plant.
So the water is actually nothing more than "waste-water" - but still very rich in minerals.

I did indeed see people doing the dirty bone dance in the blue lagoon, and my friend pulled a fist full of hair out of his shorts (that wasn't his).
