I love this card of two children on roller skates. It was sent as a Christmas greeting to Miss Irene Lane and the two children are Frances and Eddie Walker.

Hi, I've searched the 1911 census and for siblings named just Frances and Edward with no other initials these seem to be the likeliest children to fit the photograph.

WALKER, EDWARD HEAD MARRIED M 38 CARPENTER AND JOINER LEICESTERSHIRE LEICESTER
WALKER, JANE WIFE MARRIED 15 F 37 LEICESTERSHIRE LEICESTER
WALKER, FRANCES DAUGHTER F 13 SCHOOL LEICESTERSHIRE LEICESTER
WALKER, EDWARD SON M 10 SCHOOL LEICESTERSHIRE LEICESTER
Address 29 PORTMAN ST LEICESTER County Leicestershire
District Leicester Subdistrict North West Leicester
      Enumeration District 45 Parish Leicester

To add to this there is an Irene Lane (age 3) on the 1901 census living at 145 Kensington Street, Leicester which, if you look on Google maps, is a 5 minute walk from Portman St.

Further to my research above I have since discovered that there is an area of Leicester called Belgrave and I found a reference to a Belgrave Rink in Leicester being in existence in 1910.

The full postal address for Portman Street is: Portman Street, Belgrave, Leicester.

I'm not claiming my info is fully correct on Frances & Eddie Walker but the facts do seem to add up. I just wonder what became of them in life.

Thanks again for all your hard work. I just wish I had the time to research more of my postcards.
I have research a little of my family history but I would not describe myself as a geneoligist. However, I do like a good mystery.
Not long after the 1901 Census became available online I was on hoilday on the Isle of Wight and whilst there my wife and I were looking around a small cemetary in Bembridge and we came across the grave of a young girl who drowned on 26th December 1907. To cut a long story short i carried out some research which was eventually published on a BBC website.

You might find this interesting and I do have some updates which are not shown. Have a read and let me know what you think.

I had a read and think it's an excellent and thorough piece of research. I was really intrigued with the whole thing as I read through and could picture her as she ran after her hat. What a shame she did!
It was very good that you had it published on a BBC website.

I looked on Google maps at the Portman Street address for Frances & Eddie and looked at their house on streetview. An unpretentious little terraced house. I like putting names to faces on old postcards and photos and have done quite a few over the years and I hope that Frances & Eddie Walker are the ones I think they are from Leicester. I did email Leicester Records Office to see if they have any more info on the Belgrave Rink of which I saw just one mention on the Internet with a boxing match being held there in 1910. Of course, the band on her dress could read Belgrave Skating Club or just Belgrave Skaters.

      Best wishes

      Wendy
