Prairie Dropseed in Penn.

Prairie Dropseed, (Sporobolus heterolepis) at the Scott Arboretum near Philadelphia. It's about a foot tall and goes dormant in the winter. I'm going to write to the horticulturist there for more info about this plant.

Prairie Dropseed is a FABULOUS 'specimen' plant in my Zone 5b garden (suburban Chicago—16 miles straight West of downtown)
Each plant takes up about 2' round and the graceful arching seed head/fronds wave above the plants in even the gentlest breezes from mid-summer right through the first frosts.
It also shades out most weed seedlings (except late-summer plantain- grrrr - but those pull out prettily easily)
This must be an early image before the fronds began to rise.
I would LV to see a whole lawn of these - EXCELLENT choice!!!

They burn it every year, too, which looks like great fun. The entire plot is actually an infiltration bed to get rid of runoff, which is also pretty cool.
