Cold Sun

Gamla Stan (Old Town) Stockholm, Sweden

I tried to capture the magical atmosphere that day, heavy snow falling from above with bright sun streaming from just above the horizon, all coming together in the narrow alleys of Stockholm's old town.

Although I am a fan of the defender, the challenger is a brave venture especially bearing in mind the limitations of digital cameras when dealing with an extreme dynamic range. And it is a venture that has paid off handsomely. The use of the buildings to frame the sun and snow drenched street adds a wonderful depth to the composition and the mood in the shot is tangible. The flare provides a further compositional element and fails to detract from the quality of the image. A very good effort.

      Goof points in your photo:
Good use of a limited tonal range, nice athmosphere

Good points in the defender´s photo:
Great reflections, minimal and narrative, fantastic reflections.

The blown out sky is a big no for me, and the monotonal range seems almost boring when compared to the defenders vivid tonal range. Sorry, but

Two seemingly similar but very different images. The defender has strong compostion and a powerful image; a larger version might increase its impact. The challenger takes an ordinary looking situation and gives it maximum impact; great use and positioning of the sun; viewed large, the snow really attacks you. So ...

I like the superb composition here.....to me the flare-out is okay it gives a raw impact to the pic. To me the defender's shot is too safe and sterile.

While I think the defender has a technically superior image, the challenger's image has much more impact on me and makes me look further. I wish the blown out area was smaller . . . it doesn't bother me that the area between the buildings is blown out, but the building on the right is too far gone for me. Nevertheless . . .

This image just seems too much of a photshop creation. The colors seem odd and maybe it is artsy, but by far I prefer the defender.

This is a great photo in my books. The blown sky is done effectively, it holds rawness that keeps me looking. One can almost feel the snow driving against your face, yet the warm tones and daring sun create a wonderful contradiction; Cold Sun.
