I was wearing chest waders so I could get
right in the mud. My oldest camera was in a
2.5 gallon ziplock bag with a hole for the
lens (with filter!), duct-taped in place,
another hole for the eyepiece, again
duct-taped. Kind of unwieldy, especially when
you're writing down kids' names in my
notebook, which I dropped in the mud. Twice. The Free Press and News shooters are wusses.
They stood at the edge with long lenses,
cringing whenever some kid started throwing
mud. Here's the gallery: www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Av

- what a great series of images. with all of
that mud, i wonder how many kids sneaked out
a poop much akin to peeing in the pool. that
sort of behavior could be coined 'mud day
terrorism'.
Mark, it's the only way. Working up close
with a wide-angle gives a real intimate point
of view (OK, and some distortion, too). Shoot
the same scene with a tele and it's like
you're watching it through glass or on a
screen.

I've heard about mud day before, but we've never gone. That is a great photo.
