Belle Isle Casino ( 1908 ) - Detroit
Kerry got a great shot of this old building. Formerly a Casino, this building now hosts everyone from picknickers to wedding receptions. Designed by Albert Kahn, this Detroit Landmark opened in 1908. Albert Kahn, although born in Germany, moved to Detroit at the age of 11 and is commonly referred to as the "Architect of Detroit" as he opened his architectural firm here in Detroit in 1895. He has over 60 of his building masterpieces in Motown being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The "casino" associated with this building had nothing to do with gambling. It was a site for public entertainments. According to the "AIA Detroit Guide," the building is erroneously attributed to Albert Kahn. The guide lists the firm of Van Leyen and Schilling as the architects.

We are both right I tthink. I found an old flyer from Belle Isle which lists the original building as designed by Van Leyen and Schilling in 1887, and the building then was redesigned and enlarged by Albert Kahn in 1907. As for it being a Casino at some point, it gets even more confusing. I found Detroit city websites that list it as a Casino when it opened in 1887 but that the gambling aspect was secondary to it's purpose as a meeting place, found another that listed it as a casino in the 1920's, and quite a few more that said it was always just a place to meet. Some list it as opening in 1887, some in 1907, and others 1908. Very strange.

Derek, you have lots of cool photos of old Detroit- thought I'd share this one of the Casino from my family's collection- notice the middle canoe- there's a Victrola IN the canoe! Apparently that was commom as I have a couple of photos of my great uncle's canoe- with the Victrola inside! (click on the photo for larger sizes).

I like the lattice work in the tower. The masonry and woodwork sort of meld together.

FYI - interesting fact back in the day (not mine but farther back) a "Casino" was a dance hall or ballroom. There may not have been any gambling at all. My mom talks of going dancing at Belle Isle to big band music in the 40's. Have to have her look at the pics and see if it was here. Also would love to see any pics of the Grandy Ballroom in Detriot. That is where my mom and Dad met in 1946.
