Uhm.... what will mentos do to coke?
Bars of Ham (78 months ago | reply)
it causes the surface tension of water to decrease allowing the carbonation in the coke to release all at once. in a normal glass it just will fizz but in a 2 liter bottle it lets the pressure build up and shoot out. about 6 mentos worked for this picture.

Actually, your explanation is somewhat flawed. Adding six pellets of The Freshmaker causes the freshness tension of water to decrease allowing all the freshness in the coke to release all at once.
Also, please be careful when trying this. With great freshness comes great responsibility.

A roll of Menthos - $0.90
A bottle of coke - $2.50
A digital camera - $450
A picture of an exploding bottle of coke - priceless.
I totally love this picture and I am 100% certain I'll duplicate the experiment. I'll keep you posted if you want.
Just one more question: You screwed the cap back on so it would go off properly?

does this work with other soft drinks or just Coke?
Bars of Ham (78 months ago | reply)
i cant take credit for the picture, kristina took that. i kept the cap off, the reaction happens fast enough that you just get the mentos in quick and get away equally quick so you dont get covered in coke. seriously, it happens fast. you can find movies of it on video.google.com. and i'm sure it would work with any drink that's carbonated.

While a two liter bottle should be able to withstand any pressure supplied by the carbonation within it, keep in mind that a 2 liter bottle is a pressure vessel with limits that CAN be exceeded. Sometimes with impressive results. A 2-L-B (2 liter bottle) loaded with crushed dry ice and sealed is a very powerful concussion explosive. It can shatter windows at 10 ft, or make an impressive waterspout if weighted to the bottom of a pool. Note that this might possibly crack the pool. No warranty of safety given or implied.
Use this knowledge only for good.

Awww, @theGarbageman.... don't try this at home, everyone...

yeah, my friends and i did the dry ice and water bottle thing all through highschool. lots of fun but my boss (pictured) says her friend lost his eye doing it. just don't do anything stupid and it can be impressive.

That's a bad thing, and a warning for everyone right there. Thanks for mentioning that it can be dangerous, too.

wait i have a question....the 2 liter bottle is it full or half way? and i just drop about 6 mentos in it, and i dont cover it? and also if i put more mentos will the explosion be better and larger?
Bars of Ham (74 months ago | reply)
the bottle was totally full, i just opened it. Just drop in the mentos and the reaction happens immediately. Do not cover it. There's only so much dissolved CO2 in the coke so I'm sure there's a limit to the benefit of adding more mentos. Try adding more and let me know if it came out more spectacular. Good luck adding more fast enough though, it's a bit tricky. Try using a tube with the mentos stacked up just above the opening and release them all at once.

if you drill a small hole in the cap and break up the mentos, dump them in with straw, you can get some amazing distance. Oh and back in 1982 when I was 15 and in summer camp, we discovered that a 3 liter bottle of soda droped from the 3rd floor onto a package of Oreo cookies (no we weren't trying to destroy the Oreo's it was just bad aim and the guy at the bottom declined to try to catch it after he caught the Oreos) when landing on the cap at about 30 degrees from the verticle axis, creates essentially a bottle rocket. the Cap cracked broke off and the impact shook the bottle sufficiently to let everything shoot out. it took off and passed through a wire reinforced window on the door of the dorm. I never realized how expensive they can be even back then.

um... does it have to be a 2 liter?? can you use a smaller one??... or what about a can??
horse_mistress67 (73 months ago | reply)
... or does diet work beter then regular??
Bars of Ham (73 months ago | reply)
Though I've never tried, I'm sure a smaller bottle would work and so would a can. I don't believe the coke would shoot as high and/or as long due to the smaller volume of coke. The can I would also imagine would yeild a less impressive result than the smaller bottle due to the shape and larger area of the opening. I've heard some say that diet works better than regular or vice versa. Let me know if you try any of these other options, I'm curious as to the effect they have to the experiment.
