A Family of Dysfunctional Undertakers

I was walking over the hill down into Meltham at midday and came across a film crew filming a pilot. They asked me to keep out of the shot, which was fine by me. Nice to have someone set up a scene, and for me to just be there with a camera. I bet if their pilot turns into a real TV programme they don't get this perfect weather again.

Huddersfield is in the background! You can see the tall smoking tower.

I think I saw a Hobby chasing a pigeon up there too. Then I watched a crow hassling a Sparrowhawk. The hawk periodically turned to hassle the crow too. Lovely day out! I think it was a Hobby I saw, but I'm not sure if it adds up. Yorkshire is slightly north of their range, and winter?! I thought they migrated south for winter! I'll have to check this. I'm no Hobby expert, but I know Peregrines quite well, and this bird had those sharp wing tips and some red colour around its back end. Can't be a Hobby though!!! Not up here in winter. Must be something else, but I can't think what. Next time I'll take my 300mm lens along and sit tight for a while. It was a fast bird. I've seen Hobbies in flight before, and their speed is just mind blowing. This bird was tacking along, low and fast, and as I said, had sharp fast wings.
