Gimmee Nuts!

© R Heeks 2010. Strictly no use without permission

I had nuts in my left hand and camera in my right. Great fun!

The large aperture of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 works well here. I love the selective focus. I think this shot is all about the eyes.

See all the soil on his/her nose! That's because they take the nuts, bury them in the flower beds, and then come back for more. Very sensible, but gets soil all over the nose. I had little soil marks in the palm of my hand later, from where these little noses had been rubbing, while the little mouths were taking the peanuts. Great day. Trust me to go all the way to London and spend all my time with squirrels.

I'd like to thank the Dutch couple who gave me a handful of peanuts. Thanks, if indeed you are Dutch!

This is one of my favourite shots. Every time I look at it, it makes me smile, and I remember how much fun it was having this squirrel look straight into the camera.

I went to the National Portrait Gallery too, which is only a few hundred yards away from the squirrels. Kept going from one to the other. Can't work out which is my favourite.

I did take over 100 shots! It was the right lens for the job though, the 50mm f/1.4.

Up until a couple years ago, I used to go to our Stanley Park here in Vancouver and feed the squirrels. Will go back again one year. They are very easily trained. Had them eating out of my shirt pockets and so on. With a dirty nose, who could resist a cute face like this one??

Hi Cathy G. I've mapped it, St. James' Park. They're very very tame. Take some nuts!
