Ridgeline elk(DSC_7525-1)

Ridgeline elk(DSC_7525-1)

While on a country drive, I noticed some elk on the top of this ridge. I pulled out my 70-300 mm lens and took a couple of shots out the car window. When I loaded the pictures onto my computer, I was surprised to see not just elk on the ridge but elk all over the hillside. Altogether, I count about 70 elk.

I believe the elk and deer have had an easy winter so far since there isn't much snow. They were very late in going to the feed lots in the valleys, preferring to stay higher up as long as possible.

Hockey rink recession (DSC_7409-1)

This is a water-level view of the hockey rink ice melting away. (Trying for maximum depth of field on this shot.)

Early end to the hockey season (LakewoodPondPano03-1)

Early end to the hockey season (LakewoodPondPano03-1)

This pond near my neighborhood froze over beautifully for at least a month. The homeowners association approved a hockey team's use of it so they diligently cleared the ice and played hockey. Last week, it snowed several inches one day followed by heavy rains and warmer temperatures the next. This left a nice snow bank around the old rink so I put my camera up about 13 feet on the pole (and on a bridge) and snapped some shots.

I was happy to get the great tree reflections, too.

This is a photomerge of about 5 pictures.

Snow on the Depot (DSC_7366-2)

Snow on the Depot (DSC_7366-2)

Today, we are seeing the first real snow storm in Boise this winter. After dropping my wife off at work, I decided to tromp through the snow that had accumulated in little more that two hours around the Boise Depot. I had to keep my camera under my coat as much as possible to avoid getting it wet.
