It has been a tough couple of weeks on Delmarva's wetlands for wildlife. Cold temperatures have frozen much of the shallow protected water making it difficult for wildlife to feed. This afternoon warmer temperatures melted some of the thinner ice so the ducks concentrated there. Competition was tough for what food was available and these Northern Pintails were fighting for what food was there.

great catch on the action..I usually see them when they bite at each other's feet...very cold here and all froze up..some are dying

It looks like a Mallard female & a pintail, is it? I have only seen the male mallard ducks fighting, & it's usually over a female! : )

It does indeed look like a female Mallard and there were some of them and some Black Ducks mixed in with the Pintails last night. Thought the same thing myself but it is indeed a female Pintail.
