Tornado in Paraná Miní
January 2004 - Never happened before in the area... An extremely hot
summer afternoon. It is said climate changes are the major influences
for these phenomena to occur.
In a few minutes it destroyed several local houses, mostly from
fishermen.

Wow. I think I'd take off rather than grab my camera if I had been there. Lucky for those of us who get to see your photo that it was you who was there. :)

lol those comments above are making me laugh... "it's not a great photo"
i think if i was you i'd have been running in the opposite direction, so ANY capture of it is impressive!

Having grown up in an area where these were common, it looks like you were too close for comfort. Great capture - I would have been taking cover or driving like hell. :)
Florencia Guedes (71 months ago | reply)
No driving possibility at all! This is an islands area and all you had was your piece of earth or the river!! thrilling!

I looked at your photo set that you referenced above - it is totally fascinating! You really captured the funnel from start to finish! The middle photos (8 & 9) clearly show the debris being flung far and wide.
Your date taken on Flickr says it was taken Aug 1, 2006... the sequence site has 2004... I was curious as to which was correct. As to what anyone says about the photo being "so-so", they have no clue... Let them try to copy what you have done! I don't think they could! :D
Florencia Guedes (71 months ago | reply)
spikeblacklab, many thanks for your comment!
The pics where taken in January 2004, that`s summer for us.
The thing is that the photos aren´t oriniginally digital so that is sth that also makes them a bit worse because the scanning process changes the thing.
The orange house is mine so imagine it was really very close from us and surprinsing because it was the first time that phenomena happened... you should imagine the incredible storm that came after that... we couldn`t come back to the city because the river was furious and had to stay there till next day with incredible winds waving our wooden house.

Terrific photograph! Congratulations on capturing the twister, especially as they are so rare in your area. We have the occasional tornado here in Birmingham UK. Last July one caused great damage but thankfully no loss of life or serious injury. It swept across the south of the city a little over 1km from here at Birmingham Selly Oak Weather Station, but because we are down in a valley and the area hit was over the hilltop I didn't even know it had happened until news started to come through!
If you are interested, there are some links to it below:

It caused big damage to islanders who lived by its way... Maybe it was not that much because few people live in the islands area compared to the city... but enough for them because it was all they had...

Dear FloraG,
My name is Mario Barrantes, and I work at the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) in Geneva, Switzerland (http://www.unisdr.org/). Our primary purpose is to facilitate an understanding of the subject of disaster risk reduction and the work of professionals in this area. Your contribution to this global effort would be to provide the picture of what disasters look like, who is at risk and/or where.
We are currently building a photo collection for use in UN/ISDR publications and a website (http://www.preventionweb.net/). We would like to ask for your permission to include your photos of [Tornado], with your name or Flickr username, in our internal collection.
We will give you full photo credit when an image is used. We will send you the link to where your photo has been used, and in some cases we can send you a hard copy.
If you agree, please reply to me at isdr-photogallery@un.org indicating the following:
- Your Flickr username:
- Your email address:
- How you would like credit to appear:
examples: John Doe; johndoe@email.com; John Doe Enterprise
- High resolution image availability (minimum 300 dpi for print):
yes / no
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Mario Barrantes

Hi Mario,
I too work for the UN, emergencies of all kind, not strictly disasters.
The reason I am replying to this is - you made me smile with the official tone in which you wrote the message, very UN like. Do not misunderstand this message, it is a friendly one. But also be aware that the UN jargon sometimes scares people away, if they're not used to it., :)
best

I think your photo is amazing! My husband grew up in Parana (the city) and we've seen some crazy thunderstorms, but never a tornado! Wow!
It makes a perfect illustration for my blog:

Impresionante... no había visto otras fotos del tornado de ese dia...
Yo estaba un poco (bastante) más lejos...
Pero el de la foto duró nada (pero más que suficiente para no querer seguir esquiando!) y desapareció... después apareció mucho más fuerte e hizo destrozos en el Miní.
This photo was invited and added to the Nature Nerds group.
