NCB Shotton colliery 8th May 1972 Barclay 1015 built 1904

Coming through the pit village of Shotton in the North East of England approaching the pit there was a smoke screen across the road (just visible in the background) being caused by this 1904 built Barclay six coupled saddle tank.
It looks as though its on the move but it was just stood by the road, unattended, and making this smoke screen obliterating the pit buildings in the background.
It must have been a very dull day as the smoke looks a little blurred as a low shutter speed was used to get some light on this subject.
Gone forever are everyday scenes in pit villages like this.

Yes, we look fondly on scenes like this but I bet the women are glad clag like this is gone!

Very nice and what a clag monster. A nice squat Barclay that very much looks as though it means serious business.

They used to sit there regularly. I went to school in Shotton Colliery in the 50's, (we never called it a village or thought of it as one) not far from where the pic was taken.
