If only I could touch her cloak
...Then I might be cured of my photographer's block! I will never
again take for granted the production of a satisfying image. I have
been doing lots of shoots recently that have produced nothing of
interest. I am pleased with this piece, but after spending much time
and deliberation over it.
I now refuse to ever believe that photography, no matter how naturally
'pretty' some people seem to think I am, is 'easy'! (You can read my rant on beauty here). Photography (at least, obtaining the visions of what I call
interesting photography) is rock hard, self-portraiture is bloody
harder...
The title is from Matthew 9.21 where there's a short story of a sick woman wanting to be cured by Jesus, with an illustration of her creeping up behind him, wanting to touch his cloak. The illustration has always stuck in my mind, sometimes it pops into my head when I am creeping up to my dog on my hands and knees, to kiss the back of his soft shin. ("If only I could touch his fur"...) Wanting to incorporate the thought into my photography somehow, I found that these unplanned crawling-clones happily fit the bill.
Thanks to Darren Rapley, I had the entire confines of White Rock Theatre in Hastings of which to make creative use. I expect you'll be seeing many more pics made in this location!

Woahhhh! LOVE it! The bright blue really stands out! In a thumbnail I wasn't too sure what it was, but sheesh, it's brilliant!
Sarah Schloo (52 months ago | reply)
I love this! Oddly my eyes are most drawn to your foot in the middle of the image...is that weird?! Just love the detail on it.
I really admire self-portrait artists, it is ten times harder to capture yourself in front of the camera, in terms of technicality (i hope that's a word) and also because you're revealing yourself to a largely unknown audience. I find it hard to get out ideas that are in my head with only me as a model, so self-portraure really is a skill and an art that I have admired in you and several other ladies on here. I think it takes a lot of skill and guts, and for people to just come out with "oh, you're pretty" comments must be annoying - it's not what you're aiming for! I see your work much more in a Cindy Sherman light - always a new character rather than as you yourself.
Very creative and wonderful treatment here, and I love the story. Usually i just make up my own interpretation story from your images, gives my brain a rest today!

and you make THIS with photographers block..... ;) so beautiful. That bue glows etherally (great nod to blue cloaks in religious art too). Beautiful ! and I have missed you ! When I saw the sun out today I ran out as fast as my little legs could carry me and snap snap snaped in the woods again. Hopefully will keep me busy for weeks... thought of you too and wondered if you were skipping around the downs :)

beautiful shot...lighting is excellent...the blue works so well and links well with the biblical reference (although I am no expert) as mary is often portrayed in blue and white, stands out so well against the black background. The black for me could be a metaphor for the situation the woman of the story is in..like the yellow of the door as if the woman has crawled through the door to her salvation...the lighting from above helps with this...

hmm.. you wearing divine blue is definitely a cleverly concealed subtext. somewhat narcissistic, though ;p
Miss Aniela (52 months ago | reply)
@ Brady - hehe thanks! what sun though?! it's been freezing and gloomy here and i started to wonder where the weather from the jumping 'Is it spring' shoot had gone!!
about the biblical blue cloak - i'm glad i kept it blue then, as i was tinkering with the Hue and Saturation at one point and having an idea to turn them pink! ;)
i liked the Hitchcock feature in VF very much - enough to fork out £3.90 to buy it! I thought the tributes were all ace except the one of the fat bloke doing the North by Northwest, that was kind of cringey...:-P
@ Red - thanks! i saw a painting in a gallery in Madrid, a huge religious style one but i can't remember who painted it. It was called The Journey of St John to Ephesus.. i think. The hugeness made me stop and stare at it for ages. The colours were absolutely amazing, the gowns were an amazing hue and floating ethereally in that iconic religious style.. so your comment makes me feel as if i have captured something i saw in that painting.. cheers.
thanks @ all!

I want your outfit lady! Please tell me you bought it from a charity shop and you don't really go to uni dressed like that?!!! ;-)) I love the dark black and the bright blue in this. Makes it rather striking me thinks. x
foxmarta [deleted] (52 months ago | reply)
great shot! i like it very much1 thanks! nice colours
[Ligeia] (52 months ago | reply)
ditto what Joanne said: I want your outfit too!!! I like the contrast of colours here. And the position of your feet is really cool!
Well donne missy!
Miss Aniela (52 months ago | reply)
haha @ Ligeia and Haggis, yeah the nightie gown thingy was eight quid from a bric-a-brac type place in brighton...there are loads of ace vintage dresses in there.. some quite expensive. Admittedly i bought another one at the same time, which was a bit more expensive, £70....
weird how much i hankered after the 70 pound one but once i had brought it home and worn it during an hour's futile round the flat photoshoot, i was sick of the sight of it...
I had more success with the eight quid one and it's also guilt-free!
[Ligeia] (52 months ago | reply)
@ Aniela: sometimes that happens; I try to do shots with expensive outfits and they just didn't work!!! If I go to the UK one day, tell me the adress of that shop!!! By the way, are you prepairing your trip to Madrid?? Can't wait to see your masterpieces :) xoxo
Proginor (52 months ago | reply)
Great self portraits, well, actually, "mise en scène". It is only fitting that these were taken on a stage. Did you have a technician doing the lighting?
Haggis Chick (52 months ago | reply)
holy smokes missy, 70 quid for a frock!!!!!!!! I want to see it now! ;-)

@ Ligeia - it's the shop below NLP where i had my first exhib ;))
yup i'm preparing the madrid exhib which will be launching on 17th April!
@ proginor - oh no these weren't taken on the stage, they were taken in an obscure drafty electrics room at the back of the theatre somewhere!
the lighting was natural light coming down the nearby staircase.
@ Haggis - i will indeed work on a pic with that frock! for 70 quid i expect at least 10 masterpieces from it!! ;)

the little picture of you in the electronics room gives a sense of the magic you've worked with this
yes, it's great to have flickr working properly again, isn't it?

Pitmatic (52 months ago | reply)
I also like the blue and your post processing that makes you body tone and clothing shape stronger not quite sure how to say that so dont hit me!.
The dirty door in the background works well as if the background was too black it would not be as interesting and the overall crawling to walking flow is good too.

The luminance on the blue dresses is splendid. As for looking good versus looking ugly, beauty comes from within, even in photos.
