MacArthur Theater

Now Playing - CVS/pharmacy. The MacArthur movie theater in Washington, D.C. opened in 1946. I think CVS has owned it for about ten years. In the early '80s they converted it into a triplex but I remember going to see Marx Brothers movies here in the '70s.

I saw "Life Force" here before they made a multiplex out of it. Now it's a drug store... tsk.. tsk.

I saw "Return of the Jedi" here opening week in '83, after waiting in a blocks-long line w/my dad and brother. I can't decide if the MacArthur or The Biograph is the more heartbreaking of the CVS conversions ...

I hate when they mess things up, but at least they left something original. "Facelifts" can evoke nightmares in the world of architecture and sensibility.
