Marina Park Sunset
30 minutes after sunset at the Kirkland Downtown Marina Park taken during winter time. Now if you visit the piers they're loaded with boats and drunk party people during spring.
Long exposure: 15 seconds
I've noticed something... There're never any stars around during my photoshoots. Maybe I should shoot later during the night? Like 3 hours after the sunset? If anybody has experiences in shooting stars, please advice. Thank you!
This is NOT a HDR photo, it is dedicated for those who don't like HDR images :P

if you want stars just be careful to not go over 30 seconds exposure, the earth's rotation starts to cause them to "streak". but i think you are right, just a little longer after sunset and you should get some stars :)

Who needs stars when you have the awesome moon? :)
Re: large images, the one way around the privacy issue is to post an image that isn't full resolution but slightly bigger than the medium size. I generally post my images with a constraint of 1200x1200.. but that's me, I don't really care if people download my images.
Here's more info on creative commons a way to protect your images, that may help with your issue as well:

btw, are you using ND grads?
alonsodr (49 months ago | reply)
Hi, my friend...
You know how glad I can be after see this... ;P LOL!
I really love it. Very good light control and gorgeous tones here
Anyway, stars needs longer exposure or higher ISO (more noise) for 30 seconds exposures. Look at my night shots and you can notice that all of them has at least 200-300 seconds, depending on the moon light.
I encourage you to proof it
:))

Beautiful capture! I love the emptiness of the docks. This has a beautiful color range and great depth of field. It doesn't need HDR. Stars are really difficult to capture. I noticed someone made a comment about the long exposure problem already. That is certainly true. Shooting away from city lights is another way to pick up more light with a shorter exposure - up in the mountains or perhaps out on one of the islands in the Sound might be a good place to explore. Good luck and have fun! I love your work.

I love how you include the lantern and beautiful moon in the frame. Truly beautiful.
Are you consider me as of the those don't like HDR images :P
Cynthia.Lou (49 months ago | reply)
Thank you for the 30 second advise! I'll try it soon.
Nice, they give you all the definitions I didn't know about. I never cared if people copied my images, until I saw someone using it on their website without asking me first. I thought that was a bit inconsiderate and decided to disable the "save picture" option.
I do have ND grads, but I haven't used them in any of the photos I've uploaded.
Higher ISO? I SEE! Really love that "North Star (1264 sec)" photo of yours :)
I totally agree that light pollution is usually the cause for no stars on a clear day. Maybe i'll make a trip somewhere this weekend.
Cynthia.Lou (49 months ago | reply)
Haha, I assume you don't like HDR since your photos display natural beauty in most of them.

Really nice shot Cynthia, although i have to wonder how you kept the lights from being more over exposed on a 15sec exposure. Or were they just very dim?
Oh and one thing, there is no real way you can disable people downloading your images on flickr. After all the browser must download the image to it's cache in order for you to be able to view it in the first place.
You could, if you had your own site, use Flash or suchlike to create something that downloads the image but does not save it to the cache, but there is still nothing to stop people from taking a screenshot.
In the end the only real thing you can do to protect yourself is to stamp a copyright notice on it (or at least your name) and only show photos at a limited resolution.
For example my photos are only 1024x768, sure people can still steal them but they are clearly copyrighted and and they would be hard to get a decent print of at that resolution.
HTH
Cynthia.Lou (49 months ago | reply)
Thanks for the information. Too bad that we cannot disable the download option. I personally don't like copyright stamped onto my photos because "Cynthia Lou" looks ugly in most ways.
This shot is actually composed of two images I believe. The sky (upper half) was not a 15 second exposure. If i remember corrently it was less than a second, therefore giving a proper exposure for the lamps as well. I failed to mention this in the description, because you can get the same effect using a GND filter, which many people posess.
