Darkness falls
I was having a really cheerful and productive day today, then the fog descended this evening, and sensing a photo opportunity I legged it up to the local churchyard...well here is the result - hope you don't find it too uplifting. - As a footnote, the plastic ND grad had fogged up a bit in the cold, which happily adds to the effect.
Olympus E-620 and 14-54 D Zuiko, Tripod and ND grad.
PS. I am getting a bit worried as I find I feel quite comfortable in this place.

I think it's a wonderfully atmospheric shot.
Oh Ernie, please don't get too comfortable there yet!
Please, please, please tell me how to photograph fog. I know there is probably no one answer to this query but I don't know what I am doing. I attempted some film shots, with my Nikon FM2n, of some fog but I didn't know whether I should be exposing for the fog, the non-fog, or something in between! Some were ok-ish but none were good.

You have basically answered it yourself Lucy, it is somewhere in between. Fog isn't really too different from a normal landscape with something dark in the foreground, - you need to choose a viewpoint that is not too contrasty just to help to even things up a bit exposure wise, even to the point of eliminating the sky altogether if you can. - I tend to use an ND grad filter to hold back the brighter top areas a bit, especially with the reduced latitude of a digital sensor. but I still Bracket my exposures anyway. If you expose for the bright fog then the dark foreground will underexpose.

I have no filters as yet but will try bracketing the exposures and will also try to expose on a mid point.
Just got to wait for the fog now.... :-)
