I used to make Carpatho-Rusyn-style cabbage
rolls (called halupki) regularly—and normally made about 100 at a
time. I learned to make them, however, from a
Polish relative of mine, Aunt Stella
(Stasha). Interestingly enough, her gołąbki
were actually not very outstanding, though
other foods that she made were wonderful!
(She made really delicious pierogi, for example.) The Rusyn babushky who "adopted" me when I was a
young man taught me how to make them
Carpathian-style.
I've also had Romanian- and Arab-style
stuffed cabbage.
When I see the above photo, I can only think
of one thing: Poftă bună!
