Mysterious Crop Circle

This morning the creek was completely ice-covered, but amazingly, there was a circle of ice that was spinning - presumably over an eddy. I didn't have my nd, but I stopped down to catch the movement

Thats pretty wild, sometimes I will see this on the lake where the ducks swim, but the movement must be something else.

What an incredible phenomena - that must have been so neat to observe. Nice capture, as you can totally see the movement of the 'circle'

Water and currents do amazing things, hey? Great shot - you're very lucky to have seen this! I saw a foam bubble that I imagine was made from similar forces. It looked like a cake!

This is called a "Circle of Life" and is known to happen only in places of magical powers...

Wow. The UFO/Magic crazies are going to come out of the woodwork now. You'll be part of their lore for generations. Be prepared to get interviewed for one of those shows on the high-hundreds channels.

I've seen stuff similar to this, but on a smaller scale. It's a known phenomenon, actually, although somewhat rare. It happens when a moving stream of water starts to freeze. Because water freezes on top first, any normal circular eddy in the flow will freeze on top, and form a spinning circle. As it continues and the water around this circular disc freezes, the motion of the spinning circle prevents the ice circle from freezing to the surrounding surface layer.

If the freeze still continues deeper, the spinning circle will float upwards, and can actually get quite thick, and create a wide ring around itself, as it grinds into the surrounding ice and the water flows through it more and more. It's quite cool to see it when it gets several inches or sometimes even a couple of feet thick.

A couple of years ago, we had one of these in a river up in northern Sweden. However, that one was about 30 meters (90 ft) in diameter. They can be really big...
