Mountaintop Removal
the point where I took this shot was an "island" of property perched over the edge of a highwall of a strip mine (they mined right up to Larry Gibson's property line). Larry's property is now almost completely surrounded by strip mining.
past those plants was a hundred+ foot drop to the strip mine below. to give you an idea of the scale of earth they've excavated, the spot we were standing at was standing used to be the lowest point in a valley- a couple hundred feet lower than where the mountain that once stood. now in it's place is this barren lunar landscape.
