Using the specular highlight to light chalkboard. SB26 at 1/8 inside DIY softbox/lightbox at camera left, about thee feet from subject. Played with levels and whitened the A+ in Nikon Capture NX. (so I won't submit this for Lighting 102).

yeah, I think the idea is to center the person's head "inside" the specular highlight of the background.

May not qualify for the assignment but a fantastic shot none the less.

This rules... There are so many different possibilities with specular lighting. Well taken my friend...

Thanks everyone! John, it was neat to discover I could light like this on two planes with one light. Thought I would have to wait for a second off-camera flash, but as you say the possibilites are endless with just one. Less gear, more brains, better light it is!

very nice image. I think it really does hit the core of the assignment, management of the specular highlight (more diffuse in this case, but still a highlight), and the feathered edge of the light from the strobe. By turning your subject around you also benefit from some bounce in fill from the highlight, awesome!

Beautiful photo. Just think how many people who aren't into photography will never have images like this of their kids growing up.
