I was very fortunate to have someone point this guy out to me. I would have never spotted the owl otherwise. The red morph is a bit rarer further north.

Probably my favourite waterfowl photo of 2011. A pair of RB mergs were diving rather close to shore in beautiful golden light, feeding on an apparent fish die off due to a cold snap.
