      I don't remember the tower and other buildings from my three visits to Yangshuo (1990, 1997 and 2004) and wonder if they are new constructions.

      I had never been to Yangshuo before 2007 so I can't compare and taking these photos from a nearby bridge was the closest I got to the tower and the buildings.
      I think that you are right though, because it all looks brand new.

      Way back in 1990 it was just a few intrepid Western backpackers who made it to Yangshuo, and it was all pretty natural then, but by 2004 there was already quite an influx of domestic tourists, and some olde worlde fake Chinese kitsch buildings had appeared, no doubt for the benefit of the domestic visitors, so I assume that the ones in your photo are more of the same. I would very much like to go to Yangshuo, but perhaps I shouldn't. I seem to have built up a pattern of going to China (including Yangshuo) every seven years, but I broke away from that by going to India last year instead.
