Grumpy Old Man
this shot is my fave for the day. love his expression, looks like me when i get up in the morning. great sharpness and the flash exposure is just how i wanted it. metering for the background, exposing for the bird with the flash and bringing out the greens in the background with iso400.
I love being able to fill the frame @ 300mm with the whole head. makes it harder to get the shot, but means that there is bugger all PP cos i dont even need to crop it. still...not the most creative or exiting composition i've ever done. lol
sb800 handheld on left side parrallel to subject approx 3m away.

Hehe, great expression. It really looks like a human and an angry one! I'm glad you used a 300 mm... for your safety :)
As you already said the picture is technically perfect and the very blurred background allow the viewer to fully appreciate the bird's plumage. About the composition, i think i would have chosen a vertical shot, just to include some of the neck, which i think could help.
Great shot!

the detail of this shot is exquisite and like the above comment the contrast between the unfocused background and the ostrich really does draw complete attention to the features of the bird. By far the best thing about this shot is the fact that the feathers and eyelashes were also taken in great detail, each one being as clear as the next. This works well with the piercing brown eyes and the pink beak
good job!

Teobius, you're exactly right. this should have been a portrait shot. unfortuantely i had my cam on a monopod and trying to use a strobe aswell so i guess you can put my shitty composition down to pure laziness. looking at it again though, this defiantely would have been a very different, (better), image in potrait mode. thanks.

First i gotta say i don't like this animal, haha, sometimes they even hound me through my dreams! But the expression is excellent! Like he wants to say 'what are you looking at, get out of my way!'.
Great details on the hair and the beak. For me it's pure horror, but it's a great shot!

beautiful shot. it's almost as if the ostrich is expressing his dislike for photos. great lighting. love this picture.

Brilliant, he looks a right grumpy old fart !, the expression is a classic and the detail is spot on being sharp and very crisp. The tinted hair and the pink side's on the beak make the face really shape into focus. But waht makes the shot great for me is the simple green out of focus background which does cause the main subject to be a very powerfull capture..

Nice work

Rooz? Using a slightly higher ISO gives you better color? Tell me more!
P.S. I love ostrich shots btw.

tor, if i was at iso100 i would have had quite a dark background, so by bumping my iso up by 2 stops it allowed more light, (and colour), to come out of the background. bumping the iso up even more would have made it too bright and blown alot of highlights in the foreground of the bird.
i use this technique for most of my macro shots. its basically a variation of "dragging the shutter".

Oh, I see now, using more ambient light :) thanks!
