Jeremy's Home Office

Having searched for an affordable desk at Ikea and other furniture stores, I decided to custom build my own. The floating shelves and drawer units are from Ikea, as is the under-desk cable management. Total cost for this project was < $500 and accommodates both my wife's and my workstations.

It's odd how beautiful organization can be. Great job, the clock in the middle is my favorite touch.

dnegron69: Most of what you see is from Ikea, the only exception being the desk surface which I custom built out of oak and reinforced with inexpensive pine. The materials for the desk surface came from Lowe's, I also had them cut the plywood to size in the store.

      Desktop Materials
4x8 Stain Grade Oak Ply (Or Whatever Wood You Prefer). My project required 2 sheets.
      Oak Staircase Molding for Trim
Inexpensive pine furring strips for reinforcement.
Metal Bonding Strips hold the sections together from underneath.
      Screws, Glue, Nails, Stain, etc...

      Assembly
I had Lowe's cut the plywood to the required size since I don't trust myself to make a perfect cut in a $40 piece of wood. I bought enough 3/4" x 2.5" pine furring strips to make a border on the underside of each section to add rigidity. This step also gave the edges extra thickness for attaching the molding. The furring strips are glued & screwed, with the holes pre-drilled and countersunk. Pre-drilling keeps the oak surface from deforming and splitting. The molding is attached with glue and finishing nails, holes are also pre-drilled here. Attach the legs (again, pre-drill), line up the sections and attach together using the bonding strips. Prep and stain or paint according to that product's instructions.

      Ikea Materials
      Table Leg: Vika
      Center Shelving Unit: Vika
      Cable Organizer: Signum
      Drawer Units: Goliat
      Monitor Shelf Legs: Capita
Monitor Shelf: Not sure. Pick what works for you.
      Wall Shelf: Lack
      Under Shelf Lights: Dioder

I hope that helps get you started. Good Luck! :)

The center piece looks a bit thin? What do you use it for?

Also, it doesn't look like there's a lot of room to rest your arms when you're typing. Does that bother you at all? Or is there something you do to move things around so that you can rest your arms on the desk?
