These types of carriages were replaced in 2005 by more modern units which were initially unreliable.
The carriages on the right were known as 'slam shut' because of the many doors and the way they were closed; they were infamous for accidents.

It's only now you've mentioned it that I realise I've not seen a slam shut train for some time.
Gone the way of the Routemaster and probably for the best.
