Entrance to the Dunhuang Caves

Near Dunhuang is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world - a series of hundreds of caves cut along a mile-long cliff and decorated with Buddhist paintings and statues. The site was active for almost a thousand years, and the art was well preserved thanks to the dry desert air. This was a major station on the ancient Silk Road, the last holdout of civilization before crossing the gigantic desert to the west.
