Potala Palace

About a mile from the Jokhang temple, the Potala palace used to be the administrative center of Tibet. It is the burial ground of several Dalai Lamas, as well as a religious center, and a palace with public rooms and the private apartments of the Dalai Lama. Over a million visitors came to the Potala in the first half of 2007, most of them Chinese who took advantage of the new rail line to Tibet. The visit is open only to guided groups, and is strictly limited to no more than one hour. Is starts with a steep uphill climb to the upper court.
