North Dakota girls dressed up and feeling glamorous in the American South West. My Great-Aunt Ruby in a dashing striped coat (don't know whether she made it or not; she wasn't quite the seamstress Hazel was), and my grandmother Hazel in the A-line skirt and cardigan. Ruby was a private-duty nurse in those days and saw a lot of the world that way; I imagine this was a trip my grandmother took to meet up with Ruby near one of her postings. Oh the sweet overworked and unflattering hair, they both loved their perms and kept them up their entire lives. Great women. My grandmother was creative and artistic but also... gentle. By contrast Ruby had a sharp, acid wit, hilarious and fun. Both married later in life, and as much as my grandparents doted on each other, I think Ruby and her Olaf were the most in-love couple I have ever known. After Ruby died, Olaf was ready to go within about a month; he wasn't particularly sick, he was just done without her. All of them influential on me and deeply missed!
