Exodus

    Bat style.
I waited for the Grand Exodus from the Bat House on the campus of the University of Florida. I was not disappointed.
The sight of thousands of bats flying out, in basically a line formation, is something to behold. Every evening at dusk, the bats make their way over Lake Alice to feast for the night.
My attempt to capture this event digitally is less than marvelous. The D70 is just not as responsive as I would like it to be.

An impressive sight. Great capture. Who cares about camera limitations.

I think the cameras limitations actually ADD to the picture! Almost like an old horror film.

I know you intended this shot to show the bats as scientific interest, but I really like the image as a piece of art. It reminds me of an Asian silk print! Beautiful color and composition.

If you don't like the D70, Nikon is getting ready to release the D90:

There's also the D300 or D3 if you don't mind parting with some dough.

I think this image - with its noise and texturing - works really well. There's something quite gothic about it!

What a gorgeous sight! I'd love to see that. I think bats are so wonderful and so misunderstood.

Whoa-nellie! This is an awesome capture! We have longed to see bats like this and even visited the bat cave outside Fredricksburg TX - but were too early to see anything.

      Awesome efftect!

I really do love this place. I should probably lug my camera down there. Last time I went I barely saw any, and I'm not sure why that was. This is so awesome though.

Wow! I agree the others. You may not have captured what you thought you were looking for, but you definitely captured something else really wonderful.

The gauzy texture of the image really adds to the impression of seeing this "through a glass darkly". Love the way you have composed this with the long diagonal of the bats following the tree line, appearing to shy away from the moon.

This is beautiful! I've had problems trying to take pictures of bats at night, being an amateur, but this is absolutely amazing.
