Glasgow Underground

I rarely have any reason to take the tube at peak hours, but I'm going to do it again at some point to improve on this shot. It's not exactly how I wanted it to be, but this was my second attempt and - given some of the dirty looks I was receiving from other passengers - I felt it would have been pushing my luck to try for a third.

I like the perspective and cold tones... but yes... apparently taking pictures within public transports it is against the law... BUT, very fascinating :D

  3. moi_images (52 months ago | reply)

hahaha.... still a good effort (and I know what you mean about dirty looks if someone thinks they might be in your picture!)

  4. mcmorran (52 months ago | reply)

I would've thought taking pictures on public transport would be no different to taking pictures in a public place. The bus operators are private companies so can probably ask you not to take photos on their property but doubt it'd be a criminal offence.

  9. Alex Boyd (52 months ago | reply)

As ever a wonderfull shot, however I do to an extent sympathize with those you are taking pictures of...having your picture taken without permission can at times be deeply unpleasant.

I funked out of a shot like this - and instead opted for an empty train just before midnight! It made its own point, but it wasn't quite the same as your interesting picture here.

  14. andrew.stuart1 (52 months ago | reply)

Very interesting shot - not a view you usually see, unless your 9ft tall. I would go back and try it again - maybe get a focus on the person nearer the front, if there is one next time, so the focus at f2.8 slowly falls away. I do like it though.. nicely done.

It's definitely forbidden to take pictures in public transportation, but I really doubt most people are aware of that. It's just these days people react very negatively to cameras... I get dirty looks *all* the time. I don't really get it, though. What are they thinking I'm gonna do with their picture..? I'm considering making a t-shirt that reads "you are NOT Maddona". Eh.

That's a really cool shot, too. Were you just holding the camera over your head, or what?

And I love your tube, so tiny and squeezable :)

Wow, many thanks for the response, everyone! I'm really glad you all like this: I really don't know how I managed to be so bold: I hadn't even been drinking, heh. But I'll certainly be trying more of this from now on.

The Glasgow underground is a bit of a toy: it hasn't been modernised since the 70s, and it just goes round and round. I've heard rumours about another line being added, though. Check out this song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTYUx8TGQq4

Thanks again for all the comments - I appreciate it.

Tommy, it's amazing. As of yet I have not had the courage, nor the urge to take a photo inside a bus, or a train or subway full of people.Usually I approach people and ask their permission.I guess one could do that for a load of people on a subway.Ask them straightout.

    A motivating capture.

i guess everyone's got terrorism fever after the london tube blast and the glasgow airport suicide bombers. i've had the sort of dirty looks here too that i wouldn't get on the streets in China. a shame really, but it does seem as if the clampdown has a real consensus.

i like the high viewpoint on this. it does give it that surveillance CCTV feel. and the out of focus woman to the fore works well too.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Public Transport Passengers, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

I've been taking photographs on and (mostly) of public transport for nearly 40 years. It most certainly is NOT illegal to take pictures on public transport in the UK. However the responsible authorities are within their rights to ask you to stop, and then you should thank them kindly and stop. There is extensive guidance to be found on the internet, not least in threads on Flickr, as you might expect. A neat precis is UK Photographers' Rights, available as PDF.
