Every picture has a story; and I am not sure what the story behind this picture really is anymore. I was visiting Mallorca in January 2002 when I stopped at a Cafe. The shop was fitted to sell local souvenirs. Behind a large glass wall this man worked away, listening to his radio and un-phased by the circus outside. I wondered, and still do, how long he had worked there, how many times he had his picture taken. I forgot about the picture, but whenever I see it, something comes over me. A feeling of being reunited with an old friend.

It was a difficult shot to take because of the low light, and having to shoot through tinted glass, but the warmth of the sun over his shoulder is almost poetic.

Please join me in a toast to good health, to my friend who I only ever saw for a short moment, never knew his name or heard him speak, but who I have grown to admire his craft and passion in this forgotten picture. Look at those fingers poised just right, balancing with care every detail.

Very good picture and extremely difficult lighting conditions I would say. Excellent image of a craftman at work.
