(Following the msg you send me about the monument)
The name of it is 'Padrão dos Descobrimentos' ('descobrimentos' means discoveries - and 'padrão' is a kind of a stone mark - with the royal coat of arms - iberian kingdoms usually placed in the new found lands, indicating they had discovered it (that they owned it).
This monument was built in the begining of the 20th century, celebrating the 500 years of the discoveries (that's why it was called that way - 'mark of the discoveries').
About the spelling, I can agree portuguese is not easy, but theese words are not that difficult: reed it in a spanish way, knowing that padrão=padraon.
