Generalità: proveniente dal Messico, questa pianta è adatta
soprattutto ad ambienti ben riscaldati, con temperature non inferiori
ai 14 gradi. Anche se normalmente siamo abituati a vedere stelle di
natale di dimensioni ridotte, queste piante possono raggiungere in
natura anche i 2 metri (in casi eccezionali alcuni esemplari possono
raggiungere i 3- 4 metri).
Una delle caratteristiche principali di questa pianta è sicuramente la
fioritura. Non tutti sanno però che i veri fiori della stella di
natale sono quelli di colore giallo all'interno, mentre le parti di
colore rosso non sono altro che foglie che assumono tale colorazione
in particolari periodi dell'anno (c.d. brattee). Solitamente tali
brattee sono rosse, ma possono essere anche rosa o bianche
