Il genere chrysanthemum conta decine di specie di piante erbacee,
generalmente perenni, originarie dell'Asia e dell'Europa, molte delle
quali coltivate per la loro fioritura. Appartengono a questo genere
anche molte specie di margherite e di astri, ed in genere gran parte
delle erbacee che producono fiori piatti, con molti petali colorati e
centro dorato. I fiori che vengono comunemente chiamati crisantemi
nascono dall'incrocio tra due specie originarie dell'Asia: c.
Moriifolium e C. indicum; nel corso degli anni dall'incrocio di queste
specie selvatiche, e delle varietà da esse derivate, si sono ottenute
decine di varietà di crisantemo, anche talune con fiori di forma
particolare; ad esempio citiamo i crisantemi pompon, che hanno
infiorescenze sferiche, con disco centrale quasi assente, e i
crisantemi spider, con petali laterali molto allungati e disordinati.
