happy labriversary!
or maybe it's a luluversary. it was a year ago this weekend that the lu-pup joined our family. i estimate that i've taken five thousand or more photos of her, with only about 140 or so making it into her flickr set.
this photo was taken on day two.

How many "Awwwww's" will this one rack up!?
I just started reading Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz. Looks like it will be a good one. Our lab is 12 now. Wish this book would have come out 12 years ago.

I love labs. Had a black one growing up. Just wish I had the space for one now! They are such great dogs...

Burden vs Hornsby 1870
Closing argument in a case where a mans dog, Old Drum, was shot and killed and the owner sued for recompensation. The defense claimed that a dog has no real value.
This is what atty George Vest had to say about that....
"Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us -- those whom we trust with our happiness and good name -- may become traitors in their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world -- the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous -- is his dog.
"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.
"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."
Happy I-gots-a-home day Lu and a basket full of meeps and Milkbones!

rosepirate - hello to you too. and hello from lulu.
jeff eickhoff - i've seen inside of a dog and have wondered about it. it's on my list. i wondered if it was anything like the hidden life of dogs which i read years ago. also, recently i read the art of racing in the rain which is a touching and humorous book of fiction that is told entirely from the point of view of a dog. i'm sure it's been done before, but it was an entertaining attempt at it.
mike cannon - yes, in my opinion, the perfect breed. but they do require some space. a lab with a yard is a happy lab.
tipping point - lulu says 'thanks, and happy me-day'.
random - i agree with all of that, of course, as lulu really is a part of our family. i do wonder sometimes to what extent she would go to protect us, as i have seen her be very frightened of a frog.
darkhairedgirl - my goal is to someday duplicate that shot, possibly with a larger mailbox. (also want to point out that i once again made you fave a dog photo).
