Project 1012

Project 1012 -- named of the postal code for downtown Amsterdam -- is the project under which the city's rulers are attempting to clean up and gentrify the Red Light District.

While it was at first welcomed by many Amsterdammers, many -- including a number of Town Council members -- have since turned against it. Primary reason for this is that the city's heavy-handed approach is taking the soul out of the place.

Many brothels in the Red Light District have already been replaced by... fashion galleries, designer studios, and jewelry stores.

There are now signs that the Alderman responsible for the project is toning it down somewhat. (Seeing that he is a politician, this is likely not the result of him paying attention to the people he is supposed to represent. Rather, with his fellow rulers sinking more than the city's budget into the ground -- literally -- on top of the current economic crisis, there likely is not much money left to spend on his crusade).
