A few times a month, Senior Airman Deng Deng will receive a brief call from family members taking refuge in Kenya and other regions of Africa. They ask him to call them back, which he is glad to do using a prepaid calling card. The calls allow him to hear a familiar voice, maintain his language skills, keep appraised of how they are doing in their refuge camp and what the status is of possible U.S. immigrations actions. The cornfields of North Dakota are one of the few reminders of his childhood when he had fun playing war games in the village corn fields of his homeland of Sudan, on the African continent. Children of neighboring clans would challenge Deng and his clan. Airman Deng is a logistics management specialist with the individual protective equipment section of the 319th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base, ND on Sept 2, 2009. Today, he is tall as a cornstalk, and the war is real as he stands tall with the United States Air Force. Behind him are the games in corn fields. Deng has been deployed and is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lance Cheung)
